The FANTOM name is synonymous with powerful creativity. These instruments are production stations, performance tools, synthesis hotspots, and evolving creative hubs. The Creative Hub series explores how FANTOM can be the nerve center of your musical journey from studio to stage and beyond. This time, we’ll discuss exactly how to use FANTOM’s external inputs and sub outs.

The Ins and Outs of FANTOM

There are many ways to utilize FANTOM’s versatile external inputs and sub outs. For example, with FANTOM’s inputs, it’s simple to hook up a microphone or guitar to create samples. Additionally, you may be in a situation where it’s necessary to send an alternate mix to another musician or refine your parts when playing along with a video backing track.

Creating Samples

Perhaps you want to want to create a vocal sample like David Ahlund does in this video. With FANTOM’s high-quality inputs and mic preamps, you can record your voice and play it back as a sample. In fact, FANTOM can assign your samples to a new Tone immediately after you finish recording so you can jump directly into sound design and track building. The same approach applies to whether you’re sampling guitar, external drum machines, keyboards, or any other audio source

Onboard effects like compression, noise filtering, or more creative effects like modulated delay can help add warmth, volume, sustain, and even more interesting sounds. At the same time, they’ll clean up your sound, making it ready to go, straight from the input.

External Mixes

FANTOM’s inputs are also great for live performing. Hook FANTOM up straight to your sound system in the studio or in a live scenario, attach your microphone, add some compression and a bit of reverb, and sing. In situations like these, FANTOM becomes your own personal mixer.

Here’s another great example. Let’s say you’re playing with a live drummer. By using the sub outs, you can send a modified mix to the drummer with just the click and key parts of the sequenced track. The drummer now hears exactly what he needs to keep in time yet still be inspired musically.

"Route yourself through one output and remix your performance without being limited by the
backing track."

Backing Tracks

In the fast-moving world of YouTube, musicians create videos on an ongoing basis. This type of content is more important than ever. Perhaps you’re playing with a backing track while a camera crew captures video.

Using FANTOM, you can route yourself through one output so only your playing gets recorded, not the backing track. That means you can come back and remix and edit your performance audio and the backing track to your video for the perfect visual take and sound.
